Crossing the Bar by Tennyson

Sunset and evening star,

And one clear call for me;

Let there be no mourning of the bar

When I put out to sea.

Harbor, St. John's, Newfoundland, 1877-1885

Pat became a member of AOL in February 1995, and joined the staff of the Genealogy Forum on AOL in November of 1995. He organized and was the first host of the Newfoundland chats. He was our captain on a mythical cruise each Sunday evening on the sailing schooner "Terra Nova," during which he led the discussions of all things Newfoundland -- genealogy, history, food and the language of "The Rock." His word for the night was a popular feature of our chats. GFSAlicia was his co-host in the chat, followed by GFSJanice, along with GFSChuck.

He has traced his Newfoundland genealogy and done numerous articles on the island's history, many of which have been uploaded to the Resources Centre of The Genealogy Forum on AOL. He traced his "whole clan across North America" and shared his findings with all who were interested.

In addition to his professional accomplishments in land planning, landscape architecture and civil engineering, he devoted much time to many other interests -- historical research and "putting a verbal history of yesteryear in a written form. As a youth group leader, he accompanied Boy Scouts to jamborees in the Northeastern U.S. and to the Atlantic Provinces of Canada.

He "survived my contract [Military Service] with Uncle Sam in tropical area of the world and came back with my head screwed on straight, and got on with my life", to put it in his words.

Most recently he uploaded to the Resources Area an article on the Irish in the North Atlantic area and Newfoundland.

In real life, Patrick headed the firm of Patrick F. Gushue, started in 1967 in Warwick, RI, and Gushue & Associates, Ltd., a Bacon Cove, Newfoundland, corporation, [incorporated 1980] as Landscape Architects, Planners, Architects, Site Engineers and Construction Managers.

In a note to GFSChuck when he was asked to join the Genealogy Forum staff, Patrick said..."I am proud of many things. It depends on which phase of my life. I have several monolithic monuments built across the United States, have published articles on timely subjects [possibly a frustrated writer] and have a drawer full of awards, certificates, plaques, and related 'Thank You''s, but my chief accomplishment is raising three wonderful children to adulthood."
