RockyIII : LOL FrankC6986 : SmallFarm, I don't know, I have only been able to track my mothers side to Stella & Robert Drew, Thanks GEN Beth : Yes, Emily, it is on Huguenots, and I am about ready to begin. Protestantism began in France as early as the 12th century with a group referred to as the Waldenses. They lived in a remote area in the Vaudois valleys. They are often referred to as the Vaudois. The name Huguenot is thought to come from a German word, eidgenoss, meaning oath-fellow. There were three main enemies of the Huguenots in France. The Sorbonne, the Parliament, and the Jesuits. Unlike in Germany and England, Protestantism never received support of the Ruler. The French kings were always in need of money and were able to get their financing from the Roman church. The story of the persecution begins with Louise of Savoy. She was the mother of Francis I, and Marguerite. Marguerite became protestant, and was the grandmother of Henri Navarre. In about 1524, the Protestants began posting articles against the church. This angered Francis and his mother Louise. He then authorized the execution of some 80 heretics from 1524-1547. In 1547, he noticed the Vaudois, and began filling his prisons with those that refused to renounce their faith. The Roman church at this time was urging the king to deal with the Protestants. Francis gave in, and the Church officials sent soldiers that ravaged 3 districts. Three small towns, and 22 villages were destroyed. 3000 people were massacred and 6-700 sent to the galleys. Upon Francis' death, his son, Henry II becomes king. Although married to Catherine de Medici, Henry was greatly influenced by Diane of Poitier. She is responsible for bringing the Guise family to court. Henry died making his son Francis II king. Since he was underage, his mother, Catherine de Medici was regent. She was indifferent to religion, but was concerned about control. She played Catholic against Protestant in order to maintain her control. By 1551, the Huguenots made up 25% of the population of France. In 1572 events led to the St. Bartholomew's Day Massacre. The massacre was celebrated by the clergy and all the Catholic countries of Europe. It was not until Henri Navarre became king, that the Protestants were given the freedom to worship. As he was a protestant, he was violently opposed by the League of Catholics. He renounced his religion, became Catholic, and the League was dissolved. Henry Navarre was very interested in colonial expansion. It was also a reason to allow the Huguenots to leave and emigrate to a country where they were free trom persecution. Unfortunately, as much as Henry tried to give the Huguenots, he became enamored with a woman who persuaded him to give control of Canada to the Jesuits. Henry was assasinated in 1610, and succeeded by Louis XIII, but it was his mother who rules. She was responsible for bringing Richelieu to power, and thus an end to the political power of the Huguenots. He attatcked and conquered LaRochelle, and ended Huguenot emigration to Canada. In 1678, persecution began again, and in 1681 the process of dragooning began. This was the billeting of French soldiers in Huguenot homes, designed to wreak havoc in the homes. In 1685, Louis XIV signed the Revocation of the Edict of Nantes and the disapora began. All through the persecution, since Louise of Savoy, many Huguenots emigrated. The first groups went to England, Ireland and Scotland. The loss of the Huguenots who were primarily educated and artisans contributed to the economic ruin of France, and yet the great industrial expansion of England. After the revocation of the Edict, most Huguenots fled to Germany, Holland or Switzerland. In Germany, they were given assistance, and did not have to pay taxes for many years. Many of them also fled to the Channel Islands Although, the Channel Islands, were more often than not, a stepping stone to England. The Channel Islands, were however, largely Huguenot, and have remained such. There were many immigrations to the new world. There were really only a few Huguenot colonies that the immigrants came directly from France. For example, the colony of New Amsterdam, assumed to be Dutch, was in fact made up largely of French Huguenots that had been living in Holland before emigrating. Many of the immigrants from the German Palinate are not German, but rather were French Protestants, that had escaped first to Germany. The colony of New Jersey was started by French Huguenots from the Channel Islands. New England had several major Huguenot colonies, one of them being in Boston, itself, another, in Rhode Island. South Carolina had 3 colonies in 1670. Virginia had several colonies, and some of the first settlers in Jamestown were French Huguenots. In Canada, most of the first settlers were Huguenot. They had to flee into the US when the Jesuits were given control of Canada. There were also many Huguenots in Nova Scotia as well. Many people assume that if you do not have a French name, you do not have Huguenot lines. Some of the common Scottish Huguenots names were Deschamps, Dupin, Fourdrinier, Portal, Charteris Names like Durand, are of Huguenot origin. In Pennsylvania, the Huguenots have German names because they emigrated with the Germans, and changed their names to sound more German. I want to end by saying if you have a dead end in Holland, Germany, Ireland, Scotland, or England, between the period of 1560-1740, look for them in France, and alter the name to be more French. You have a very good chance of finding your ancestors. Any questions? Jim Markle : Nicholas Marchel (Merkel?) Albany, N.Y. late 1600's -- was he a Hugenot or Not? (sorry!) Pat G74934 : ?
