The Master Genealogist Review
---TMG comes in version 1.2 for DOS and in a Windows version. I downloaded the demo for the Windows version today and did the lessons. I was floored by this program. First - all of you that are PC users - I heartily recommend that you download the demo at http://www.whollygenes.com (Sadly, this software was discontinued at the end of 2014). It is a free download and takes about 15 minutes. It will need to be unzipped. Click on "setup.exe" and it will install the demo to your hard drive and offer to run the demo immediately.
---I can't even begin to tell you all the features of this jewel. I do want to touch on three that are new to you - a Research Planner, a Timeline feature and the book printing. The source manager beats even Family Origins and the fields for data entry are UNLIMITED! Yes - unlimited. That means that long names and locations can be entered with ease. You can enter multiple sets of parents and multiple date/locations for single events and cite the sources of each. The features are astounding.
Research Planner
---This feature allows you to enter all your research plans. Let's say you plan a trip to a library some distance away. You can go through your data and decide what you need to look at on who, areas to research, whatever you want to include in your plan, then print the thing for a ready reference.
Timeline
---TMG comes with several timelines that you can plug into an individual record! It's amazing.
Book Printing
---TMG has several book formats and gives you complete control over the data. But the thing that is truly great about it is that it prints to a variety of word processor formats - WP up to 7.0, MSWord 2.0 to 7.0, MSWrite, and several others and compiles the books using that formatting. Then it will compile almost any kind of report you could ask for - based on your search criteria.
---There is one drawback, however, that has to do with printing. This version will not print to printer. I had been assured that this would be corrected with the upgrade being sent to registered users of this version.
NOTE: I received the upgrade in June and the "print to printer" correction was made. All in all this is the most complete program I have yet to see.
---The power of this program made me order it by rush delivery I was so excited. However, the biggest drawback is its price - $129 plus S&H of $4.00. With that the CD also contains a gigantic list of addresses for genealogical researchers and the locations of 100,000 cemeteries.
---TMG was written by genealogists for genealogists and it shows.
