Ancestral Quest (AQ) Version 2.0 Review

AQ is now in version 2.0. For PAF users this program will read and write to your PAF database. This will change in the near future when PAF markets version 3.0 which will be completely restructured.

As a stand alone program, AQ has some weaknesses that make it less desirable than most of the other windows programs and I don't think there is a MAC version as yet. AQ does include a scrapbook area and will print pictures to pedigree and family group sheets. It does cascade or extend (wall chart) pedigrees.

As a windows program it falls short in that you can not use the copy/paste to/from clipboard function for reports. It will copy/paste to/from clipboard in the notes files so if you have written histories in a word processor, or scanned them in from books, you can edit them in the word processor, then copy/paste to AQ's notes area.

The advantage of having descendancy charts accessible for e-mail is lost with AQ. However, the register report in NGS format and either in ahnentafel or descendancy can be printed to a text file. This too is a weakness as most other programs are printing to file in RTF which preserves the codes for your word processor.

    Overall

AQ is user friendly in it's screen presentation (5 generation ped view) and is fairly easy to enter data and find individuals. It's new scrapbook makes it appealing. BUT - PAF users have many more print to file advantages that AQ lacks. AND - if you are a PAF user with win 95 - you can run PAF when you are online. Just use the minimize feature. MAC PAF users don't have to worry about that as they can access PAF with no problem. AQ is a nice starter program but there are others that have more powerful features in the windows environment.
